To: robin@sun.com, jfarrel@sun.com Subject: Questions for the X11/NeWS SIG --text follows this line-- I told you I'd send some questions about X11/NeWS, for the SIG at CHI'88. Here they are! - How does the NeWS selection service interact with that of X? - Cut & Paste between NeWS and X windows? - What sort of access do NeWS processes have to X Properties? - How is color handled? - Can NeWS processes manipulate the color map in the manner of X clients? - Does journalling work over both X and NeWS window? - Do you have direct access to Xlib from PostScript? - What lower level parts of the X server are exposed to PostScript processes? - Describe the class heirarchy that the will be supplied with X11/NeWS! - Tell all about class Canvas! - How does the NeWS window manager interact with X windows? - Do you need to run a seperate X window manager, or can the NeWS server handle window managment for X and NeWS windows? - What are the advantages of having the window manager running in the NeWS server? - Can you run a normal X window manager, and have it manage NeWS windows as well as X windows? - Can you emulate and prototype X extensions in PostScript? - How about making X input extensions that use NeWS Items to emulate different types of hardware, like knob and botton boxes, n-dimensional pointing devices, etc. - What new PostScript extensions are there? - "send" as a nice fast primitive???! - dynamic loading of primitives? - Multitasking - Will we ever have preemptive multitasking? - How about timeouts for badly behaved processes that don't pause? - How complete is the PostScript implementation? - Font model? - charpath? - Halftoning? - Describe the underlying graphics package that X11/NeWS is based on!!! - Can canvases be positioned above or to the left of their parent? (This does not work in NeWS 1.1!) - What's all this stuff about Open Look? - What is the NDE toolkit?
