From news-server%cs.qmw.ac.uk@NSFnet-Relay.AC.UK Tue Feb 27 03:44:05 1990 Date: Tue, 27 Feb 90 8:21:33 GMT From: news-server%cs.qmw.ac.uk@NSFnet-Relay.AC.UK Subject: Files from the NeWS server To: don@mimsy.umd.edu ================================ -rw-r--r-- 1 liam 7170 Aug 31 19:13 sites/NeWS_people ------------------------------- ============================================================== William Roberts liam@cs.qmc.ac.uk Department of Computer Science Queen Mary College 190 Mile End Road London E1 4NS I have a general interest in PostScript and NeWS and I am involved in our "NeWS Terminal" project. (I also run this NeWS Information service). ============================================================== Philip Goward pjg@r5.cs.man.ac.uk Department of Computer Science The University Manchester M13 9PL I am currently working on a parallel implementation of the NeWS system (PIX), with Wm Leler as a Masters (research) degree project. The department has a NeWS source licence. As well as parallel aspects of NeWS I am particularly interested in any user-interface developments that are/will be made with the system. ============================================================== Jos Warmer jos@cs.vu.nl Department of Mathematics and Computer Science VU Amsterdam Boelelaan 1081 1081 HV Amsterdam We are working on a project concerned with interactive structured document manipulation. The fact that both the screen and the printer can be managed by the same PostScript code makes NeWS the most appropriate window system for our purposes. We are also interested whether NeWS is officially ported to other systems. Our project might receive fundings from the European Community, and they would like to have the results of our project running on various machines. ============================================================== Ian Kemmish ian@wcw.co.uk Whitechapel Workstations ian@wcwvax.uucp 75 Whitechapel Road London E1 1DU England I'm "Mr. NeWS" at Whitechapel. I've done a creaky port for the MG-1 etc. which is pretty sluggish on anything less than an MG-2, but academic sites are probably welcome to the source if they want to tinker (I'll have to check with my manager!) I've also done an OrielWindow class, which replaces all the LiteWin stuff with an Oriel-like look and feel. Most of my time right now goes on the port of NeWS to the new Whitechapel Hitech-10 (a.k.a. Pondermatic) which, so far as I know, is the first machine to be released with NeWS as its primary window manager (and probably the fastest NeWS machine you'll see). I'm particularly interested in persuading people to send me their pet NeWS bugs, as I want to make sure that ours is the best port around. I'd also like to hear from anyone who has already ported a significant application to NeWS on other kit, as I want to check out compatibility and portability issues as soon as possible! ============================================================== Jorgen Lindskov Knudsen jlk@daimi.uucp My interests are in creating a Beta (it's an object-oriented pro- gramming language) interface to NeWS and using that conduct research in the architecture of interface systems. ============================================================== Johan W. Stevenson johan@nlgvax.UUCP I am working in the advanced development laboratory of Philips Data Systems in Geldrop, The Netherlands. We have several projects going, both hardware and software oriented. For most projects we have decided to use NeWS. One software project aims at solutions for production workers in large offices. To get rid of paper in these offices (at far as possible) we will use workstations with large screens and fast support for the display of scanned images. Moreover, we need a superb user interface to make the use of workstations acceptable in these office environments. NeWS will be used throughout. On the hardware side we are will port NeWS to a number of proprietary machines, for instance to support the abovementioned software project. In my little spare time at home I have ported during the last year the MINIX operating system (like UNIX-V7) to the Atari ST. I have some ideas to port NeWS to this environment, if I can find the time for it. ============================================================== Hakan Kallberg hk@simulina.se I am a NeWS-user using a Sun 3/60. I run a small company called Simulina, that develope simulation tools. I plan to use NeWS for annimated graphics to the simulations. ============================================================== Jeremy Huxtable jh@ist.co.uk I work part-time for Imperial Software technology and part-time for Sindex Speech Technology. Kevin Smith at QMC is part of the latter if you want more info. We (sindex) deal with Chinese language computing, particularly the input of Chinese text and I am trying to implement a Chinese input system on top of NeWS. This is working quite well: it intercepts all keyboard input (using the focus mechanism) and converts it to Chinese characters, redistributing as simulated keyboard input. The 2-d menu stuff is used for selecting components of characters. At IST I am working on a diagram editor using NeWS which also seems to be going quite well. NeWS certainly beats X windows etc. into the ground for doing anything useful quickly. I have a small (~700 lines) written-entirely-in-postscript graphical editor a al MacDraw which I will post eventually when I get the time to get it working properly. It's only taken about 3 hours to write so far but already it's useful for pasting up quick page layouts. ============================================================== Martin Reed mr@ritd.co.uk We sell Document Image Processing (DIP) systems (basically means turning office documents in to bitmaps, pushing them around electronically and filling up optical disks with them). We OEM Sun kit as the platform. I am actively trying to make up my mind as to what window system to use for our next generation of user workstations. Technically I would prefer to use NeWS. Commercially I may be forced to follow X.11 (perhaps with Display Postscript as the "graphics" package). Alternatively, someone will do such a brilliant job of defining *and* implementing a portable toolkit that I won't have to care (I don't have the resource and we'd rather use a standard anyway). I am tracking OpenLook but I'm not holding my breath. I'd love to be able to share thoughts on the subject with the world-at-large. ======================================================== Iestyn Walters, (cdriw@uk.ac.stafpol.cr83) Department of Computing, Staffordshire Polytechnic, Blackheath Lane, Stafford ST18 0AD Tel: (0785) 53511 x6053 The Real Time Group here at Staffordshire Polytechnic have an OS-9/68020 based VME rack. This is used to support a modest number of transputers. I use the transputers in native mode in my work on modelling black-box systems in general, and the Derbyshire Karst in partic- ular. My problem is how to display graphics on the Sun when the only link is a 9600 baud serial line? Use PostScript of course! My interest therefore is in the compact communication offered by NeWS. ================================ -rw-r--r-- 1 liam 604 Aug 31 19:14 sites/NeWS_people.addresses ------------------------------- William Roberts liam@cs.qmc.ac.uk Philip Goward pjg@r5.cs.man.ac.uk Jos Warmer jos@cs.vu.nl Ian Kemmish ian@wcw.co.uk Jorgen Lindskov Knudsen jlk@daimi.uucp Johan W.
